As a Dancer

"On going through Komala Varadan's book entitled 'Bharatanatyam - Expanding Horizons' it seems as if the story of Ramayana, in glimpses, is being enacted in front of you. This book has a special significance for me considering the linkages that Ramayana and Mahabharata has with the art of my home country Indonesia".

                                                                                                         New Delhi

Komala Varadan has now most judiciously selected appropriate verses from the Ram Charit Manas to present a full Bharatanatyam recital without changing the format or sequence. The recital remains within the steel frame work of Bharatanatyam but delicately the content and the text is replaced with the verses of Tulsidas. I am sure that like me, many will be able to reach the inner sanctrum of Bharatanatyam through the aid of accessability of Hindi verses.

Komala Varadan's Ram Charit Manas is not only innovative but is a pioneering and path breaking work.

" In her endeavour to popularize Bharatnatyam and reach out to a larger audience, komala chose Tulsidas's Ram Charit Manas and choreographed it into a fullscale recital that got wide spread appreciation all over the country. Komala has now pieced together this recital into a unique book 'Bharatanatyam - Expanding Horizons'."

"The scenes of the story are presented through intricate footwork, facial expressions, eye movement and mudras. Komala weaves a pattern, a story through rhythmic movements."

"All in all it is an immensely useful book, a collector's item specially for all connoisseurs of dance."

"It was for the first time that a classical art of this nature with a solo artiste performing for more than 90 minutes holding the attention of the audience had been presented in Bulgaria. "

" ....I had many, many opportunities to witness cultural shows, in different parts of the world. Mrs. Komala Varadan has charmed me not only by her excellent dance but also by her masterly explanations of ideas and themes. I appreciate her as a top class Dancer, Teacher, Artist."

Creation through Tradition: Multi artist Komala Varadan, overcame the expressional limit of Indian Classical Dance. "However creation is limitless. Modern Bharatanatyam performance has limits to newly arrange Indian myths or fables. But I saw the possibility of overcoming those as I saw her self- made CD including meditative works about nature and environment. To do this, her careers as a painter photographer, and novelist have all worked together. "

Many colours to choreography.
"That the multifarious media has influenced her perceptions of dance and sharpened her sensibilities came through when she presented recently her significant work Prakritim vande, in the form of a video CD, punctuated by lively dance sequences at the Alliance Francaise.
Prakritim Vande was a veritable melange of songs in many Indian languages, punctuated by camera-shots of Nature to capture the moods of Indian seasons and worked through with choreography of a high order.

Komala's Dizzy Heights.
"It was indeed a historic event when the elite of Delhi assembled to witness the lecture-cum demonstration given by the multifaceted artist who combines in her unique reputation of being a danseuse, painter, photographer and writer. And all of these she has laurels aplenty.

Right from the Invocation to the Mangalam, Komala let lose a flurry of emotion packed gestures as she danced through a particular theme and explained their nuances. In a manner most lucid and communicable, she drove home the message that dance like any other classical art form calls for single-minded devotion, total concertation and sense of purpose without which it is impossible to scale dizzy heights."

"Through out the show, it was Komala's sensitive mime capability that was to the fore. It was communicative. A notable feature of the show was Komala's ability to create atmosphere...".

Grandeur in Komala's concept of Durga
"Komala's expertise in the technique of Bharatanatyam is unparalled. There was grandeur in the awe-inspiring image of Durga as performed by Komala on the basis on the description given in the Vedic shlokas".
